I've been working on an event coming up that I'm really excited about, and I wanted to tell you, my dear readers, about it before the early bird (just $5) ends tonight!

Wine & Deep Listening: Jazz for the Curious
Monday, Sept 14 7:30pm @ ZACH Theatre, $5 Early Bird
Dr. Jeremy George, Director of Jazz Studies at Huston-Tillotson University, leads a casual guided listening experience that breaks down how jazz works with a live band on stage. You’ll even get a Discovery Guide of curated albums to take home. No musical background needed.
Over the weekend, three major things happened to our music scene.
Firstly, Nick Barbaro (also Austin Chronicle owner) sold his remaining stake in SXSW to Penske Media Corporation, making the festival now 100% corporate-owned.
Then, Valhalla announced that it's closing October 26 because the building was sold out from underneath them. Valhalla’s a metal/punk bar where you could eat the famous Marinara Miracles spaghetti and watch bands while nursing a $2 pint. The new owners invoked the lease termination clause immediately, and they have 60 days to vacate.
Finally, while looking into the Valhalla situation, someone browsing LoopNet noticed that 701–713 Red River, a single lot that is home to Elysium and 13th Floor, was just listed for sale for $4.1 million.
It’s too late for Valhalla unfortunately. If 701–713 sells to a developer, Elysium and 13th Floor are likely to go with it, and losing both venues would gut what remains of Red River as an independent music corridor. "Live Music Capital of the World" as a concept brings a lot of money into our tourism economy, and it’s disappearing one lease termination at a time.
Never mind, of course, the massive cultural hit. Elysium has anchored Austin's goth and industrial scene for 25 years, and they’re in this newsletter almost every week. Drag shows, 80s night, K-pop night, Japan Nite, and touring bands that reroute through Texas just to play the room. The 13th Floor is named for the 13th Floor Elevators, the Austin band that coined the term "psychedelic rock" in 1966 and they are arguably this city's single biggest contribution to music history. The venue is a deliberate continuation of that legacy, as their booking concentrates on the psych, punk, and rock & roll that Red River was built on.
I'd normally write something mournful and we’d all feel sad and go on with our day, but instead I’d like to see if there’s anything we can do.
The problem is that every venue on Red River, and a lot of other important spaces in this town, are one landlord's phone call away from becoming a fried chicken franchise. (Valhalla's building was reportedly bought by Gus's Fried Chicken.) This keeps happening because venues rent the buildings they make famous, and none of that cultural value matters when the lot changes hands.
It turns out other cities have started solving this problem. Hundreds of pubs in the UK have been saved by communities pooling money to buy the building when the brewery tried to sell. Austin actually already has Rally Austin, which manages the city's Cultural Trust Fund and has helped secure long-term leases for Hole in the Wall and Antone's. And they have $13 million in their Historic Preservation Acquisition Fund!
I am going to see about talking to the people directly affected to understand what is already going on behind the scenes that maybe we could all help with. I definitely think there may be a few ways forward here. If you have additional background, know anyone who can help, or if you want to be part of figuring this out, please reply to this email!

Tiny Tales to You: Adult "Hoppy" Hour

Igi ni Sòrò: The Trees Are Speaking

This might be the most Austin thing happening all weekend: an outdoor listening ceremony using plant-wave technology that translates the bio-electrical activity of trees into audible sound. The afternoon opens with a capoeira roda, then moves through West African kora performance, percussive dialogues with natural vibrations, and an interactive nature-inspired movement experience. Fifth Annual Lagers & Literature Book Fair
