The winter solstice happened on December 21st; the shortest day and longest night of the year, with Austin seeing nearly four hours less daylight than the summer solstice. We aren’t about to let the darkness get us down! There’s still a great list of awesome stuff going on this week, and many restaurants and bars open to help you celebrate, a little further down below.
News about town: Southwest Airlines announced it's opening a new crew base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport which should bring 2,000 high-paying jobs to the city by mid-2027. The base opens in March with about 1K employees and comes with a $14 million state grant plus up to $5.5 million in city incentives. Meanwhile, the city and the Austin Firefighters Association finally reached a deal on a $63 million four-year labor contract after months of tense negotiations, maintaining the four-person staffing standard on fire trucks and giving all firefighters a $1K bonus in the new year. Austin also approved a $150K incentive for "Brothers," the Apple TV+ series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson that's filming at McConaughey's ranch. This will be the first project under the city's revamped Creative Content Incentive Program, and it’s expected to bring $6.2 million in local wages and $9 million in spending to the area. And for book lovers, Hannah Terrell was named the new director of the Austin Public Library after nearly 20 years in the field.
Other than the events, what would you like to see more of in the new year?We tried a few different segments this year, let me know what you liked! |
If you're looking to eat or drink out this Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, we've got a pretty comprehensive rundown of who's open and for what! For something upscale, Siti is offering a five-course Southeast Asian-inspired dinner on Christmas Eve for $100, while Summer on Music Lane has a $65 prix fixe menu both days featuring prime rib, cherry-glazed quail, and vegan options. Tillie's in Dripping Springs is doing a seafood-forward Christmas Eve dinner followed by a Texas-style brunch on the 25th, and Nido at The Loren offers skyline views with holiday specials. For a more casual vibe, the classics are reliably open: Crown & Anchor serves burgers and cheap craft beer 365 days a year, Kelly's is open on Christmas Day with hearty Irish comfort food like shepherd's pie and Irish stew, and Frazier's Long & Low will get you a Coors and a cheeseburger for under $10. 24 Diner is running a prime rib special with slightly abbreviated holiday hours on both days. If you're in the mood for festive drinks, Jingle Jangle at The Dead Rabbit on 6th Street is an Irish Christmas pop-up running through New Year's Day (reservations are full but they're saving room for walk-ins), and Justine's has transformed into Pearl of the Night with oysters, caviar, and champagne under their famous winter tent. For those who'd rather stay home, Walton's Fancy & Staple is doing glazed ham, pies, and other holiday dishes for pickup in the lead-up to Christmas, and Parkside, known for its raw bar and pastries, is offering festive holiday menus and platters perfect for Christmas morning.
