What's Weird ATX
The influencers were NOT behaving in Austin last week. During a $30K scavenger hunt, livestreamer XenaTheWitch shot random bystanders with a paintball gun before getting arrested live on stream - when told she "almost shot at a real worker," she replied "I don't give a f***" while still broadcasting 🙄
Separately, someone broke into Austin Pets Alive! at 1:21 AM, systematically releasing dogs from kennels before taking two to a nearby bar, though thankfully bar patrons convinced the suspect to surrender the animals safely.
Some Austin residents were jolted awake by more unexplained "loud booms" around 4 AM. Apparently, these types of occurrences are so common there is even a website: atxbooms.com. As of yet, no definitive source for the explosive sounds has been found. Do you have a theory?
Let’s end the general Austin news with a bit of sunshine: 150 goats have returned to clear poison ivy along the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail as part of the city's ongoing vegetation management efforts. Residents are advised to stay away from the poison-ivy saturated goats, as adorable as they are!
In food news, Freeze Week Austin returned, with 14 East Austin bars shaking up creative frozen cocktails like the “Blue Flamingo Margarita” and doling out prizes for those who collected stamps. Did you check it out, and if so which was your fave?
A new retro-chic spot, East End Ballroom, opened and drew attention for its moody velvet-draped setting, live music, and elevated comfort fare like steak frites and smashburgers. The Michelin Guide announced its return to Texas ahead of the October star ceremony, with Austin expected to shine again after last year’s strong showing of seven stars and numerous Bib Gourmands. Meanwhile, other local food highlights included Pluckers raising $116K for TEXSAR flood relief, the announcement of the Austin Mac & Cheese Festival’s island-themed return, and BOA Steakhouse debuting a vegan “Beyond Steak Filet”.
