What's Weird ATX
We’re entering the dog days of August now, but the interesting happenings do not stop in Austin, no sir. Speaking of dogs, Noodles was found, @austineater’s beloved pup who was missing for an entire week, and all of Austin rejoiced.
Netflix's Love Is Blind announced casting for Austin singles, looking for people "who are brave, open-minded, and ready for a committed relationship".
👀 will you apply?? if you’re considering it, just hit reply, I’m dying to know!
Meanwhile, Austin FC beat D.C. United 4-2 in a very exciting, high-scoring affair. And nature lovers finally got good news when Lake Travis officially reopened for recreational use on July 24 after weeks of flooding.
In food news, the culinary world is saying goodbye to a legend as Elmar Prambs, the executive chef at Four Seasons Austin, is retiring after 40 years at the helm. This German-born chef has literally cooked for Queen Elizabeth and Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton and has been dubbed the "patriarch" of Austin's culinary community for mentoring many of the city's top chefs. Separately, a nostalgic '90s video store speakeasy called Back 2 The Video Store launched last week, where cocktail-sippers browse fake VHS selections organized by ingredient "genres" to order their drinks. Meanwhile, longtime food truck favorite Austin Oyster Co. is actively hiring a chef de cuisine for their upcoming brick-and-mortar location on East Cesar Chavez, set to open by year's end. Smokey Mo's BBQ signed a lease for a new Bastrop location opening in November, while Otoko's executive chef Yoshi Okai expanded his culinary empire to Aspen with a new Japanese-Spanish fusion concept called Hai Sí. Adding to the mix, Tómalo Grill is reopening its takeout window alongside a new agave lounge after taking over the former Balacar space.
If you haven’t heard, some Texas representatives are attempting to redraw congressional maps to split Austin into multiple districts stretching hundreds of miles away, potentially eliminating Greg Casar's district and forcing a primary between him and Lloyd Doggett. With hearings running until August 19, Austinites can act now by attending legislative hearings, contacting state legislators (find yours at wrm.capitol.texas.gov), and supporting legal challenges claiming Voting Rights Act violations. Call the Bill Status Hotline at 877-824-7038 for legislator contact info, or mail concerns to Texas Senate (P.O. Box 12068, Austin, TX 78711) and Texas House (P.O. Box 2910, Austin, TX 78768). You can also donate to legal challenges through Common Cause Texas or League of Women Voters Texas. The proposed maps would carve single neighborhoods like Rattan Creek into three separate congressional districts. This creates practical governance problems beyond just political representation, as residents would need to contact multiple congressional offices for local issues.
