What's Weird ATX

If you ❤️ this newsletter, consider becoming a WhatsWeirdATX supporter for just $2 a month

So apparently, someone literally shot a helicopter out of the sky back on November 10th near Red Rock and Rosanky in Bastrop County. A BlueBonnet Electric Cooperative chopper doing surveying work got hit by a bullet from a high-powered firearm fired from below. The helicopter managed to land safely and local news outlets announced on Dec 12 that the FBI is now investigating. Also making headlines on the crime beat was the former Austin Energy employee who embezzled nearly a million dollars over six years by creating fictitious vendors and using his city credit card to pay them for fake services like debris removal and window cleaning. Ultimately, Mark Ybarra got indicted on first-degree felony theft charges.

The sky put on quite a show this week too, with a bright fireball meteor spotted north of Austin on December 9th that had locals posting dashcam footage and calling it one of the most impressive meteors they'd seen in years. It's tied to the Geminid meteor shower that peaked on December 13-14, but is still ongoing, so keep looking up.

The Illustrious Robert Porter

You know we love to support local business around here. Robert Porter is a longtime Austin landscaper (20+ years!) with a love of native plants and herbal remedies. He’s also a born and bred Austinite and has lore aplenty. As a satellite to his landscaping work, Robert is doing some last-minute Christmas Light installations: lights included, starting at just $400 for a simple roofline, $500-600 for roofline plus trees and bushes! (Compare this to most places, which charge $500 - $1200).

Please also ask him about landscaping if that sounds interesting; he’ll have your garden/backyard/balcony planter looking spiffy all year-round with minimal effort (that’s the power of native plants).

Text Robert at 512-415-7147 to book your spot with just a 50% deposit (don’t forget to mention WhatsGoodATX sent you!).

And THANK YOU for supporting the awesome local businesses that support this newsletter!

This week, Austin's holiday pop-up bar scene has definitely reached heights heretofore unknown. The Die Hard themed pop-up at Saturn Cocktail Club has air duct hallways, fake C4 explosives, 1980s office party décor, and cocktails with names like "My Wife's Pregnant" and "Is the Building on Fire?" Other honorable mentions: Pearl of the Night @ Justine's, Sippin' Santa @ Nickel City, Get Lit! @ Kitty Cohen's, 12 Days of Thompson @ Thompson Austin, Jingle Jangle @ The Dead Rabbit Austin. And the weird Old Austin tradition of 37th Street Lights is back for its 40-something year with quirky volunteer-run displays that proudly reject typical holiday aesthetics. Of course, don’t forget The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, which just opened on December 13th at Palmer Events Center for its 50th year with local artists, live music, a full bar, and the National String Off Competition. And even H-E-B is in on the fun! They installed a surprise gift vending machine, with local favorites such as their tortilla blankets, at Austin Bergstrom to welcome and delight travelers.

Honestly, I was expecting the events to die down this week but we’ve actually got an excellent lineup 🎉 So much fun stuff to do for those of us sticking around town!
