What's Weird ATX
If you ❤️ this newsletter, consider becoming a WhatsWeirdATX supporter for just $2 a month! Or if you can’t support financially at the moment, forward us to a friend or two! |
Well, I can’t believe it but this year is actually coming to a close. Somehow, it feels like it’s simultaneously been one of the shortest and longest years of my life.
Probably the best part of 2025 has been checking in with y’all every week and continuing to remind myself of how awesome Austin still is, despite all the grumbles near and far about how we’ve lost our weird.
This year, WhatsWeirdATX grew by 500% and drove almost 16K clicks to local Austin businesses and events! So proud to be serving the community in this way, and so thankful for all of you, that you support the wild and creative in this town.
To that end, I want to give y’all an update about WhatsGoodATX. Over the last few months, I worked with some amazing students at UT to revamp the app. I can’t wait to show you the new redesign and features (hopefully as soon as next month). And, if you’ve checked out the app or website recently, you may already have noticed one major update is already out (a 12x improvement in search speed)!

The incredible UT Convergent Forge Team!
If you’d like to catch an early preview of the next release and give me feedback to help shape the future of WhatsGoodATX, please join our beta program! Just click here and I’ll automatically add you. I’ll be releasing a new beta with all our updates very soon and would love to chat with you about it!
Also, if you’d like to help in any other way, please shoot me a message (reply to this email). Have a lot of ideas I’d love to tackle this year including a creative events workshop and regular WhatsWeirdATX meetups, and I will need your help!
Food scene news from the past week: El Mercado Restaurant & Cantina South shuttered after four decades, with the popular De Nada Cantina set to take over the space in early 2025. Bouldin Acresexpanded to far South Austin in the former Lustre Pearl South location, marking their third outpost. The team behind The Cavalier debuted High Road DelicaTexan in Bouldin Creek, offering sandwiches and gourmet groceries. Late-night revelers got a new option with Taco N Maíz opening on Sixth Street with 4am service hours, while Chicago pizza expertise arrived at the new Moderna Bar & Pizzeria. On the sad note, Rebel Cheese announced it's closing its Austin bistro, though the vegan cheese company will continue selling products. Looking ahead, rotating sushi chain Kura confirmed a Sunset Valley location is coming, and beloved Rosen's Bagel Co. announced a third location in Windsor Park for spring.
Lots of fun events in the next few days, in addition to an incredible NYE lineup. I tried to include something for everyone, from super luxe (and pricey) events to even a fabulously free option! Have a blast ringing in 2026 y’all, you deserve it.
