What's Weird ATX
If you ❤️ this newsletter, consider becoming a WhatsWeirdATX supporter for just $2 a month! Or if you can’t support financially at the moment, forward us to a friend or two! |
This past Thursday, I set up a little booth at Medici Coffee Roasters for their holiday party! Medici has a few locations in Austin, but this was at my favorite: It’s located in the Springdale General campus, a commercial park that offers affordable spaces to Austin makers and creatives.
In addition to chatting with folks about WhatsGoodATX and WhatsWeirdATX, I was doing event readings. Think a tarot reading, but for the creative event that's been living in your subconscious. I wanted to talk to people who may have never thought about throwing an event before, or maybe they have, but are a little intimidated. The response was fantastic! In just an hour and a half, folks came up with so many amazing ideas, from an outdoor punk show to a medieval cyberpunk speakeasy. I was so inspired. As many of you know, I put on my first event last year and it was probably the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done (well, second to this newsletter of course!)

Still from my creative event last year ❤️
As I know you already know, it’s up to us to take up the mantle of preserving the weird. And it’s really not as hard or costly as it may seem! There’s lots of amazing resources (and even funding!) in this town. This is a bit selfish on my part, I must admit. I want to make sure there’s a steady stream of new and creative events to feature on WhatsWeirdATX and WhatsGoodATX!
With that said, do you want to do an event reading? It’s free! I would love for you to try this. If you’re curious, here’s the first question.
This past week has been a lot for our food scene. Vince Young Steakhouse announced it's closing after 15 years downtown, and Vespaio (as well as Chapulín Cantina) will be shutting down at the end of February. And if you want to get one last meal in, the steakhouse will be closing January 24.
In happier news, Ramen Del Barrio popped back up with a temporary residency on Airport Boulevard, and Poeta is relaunching inside the East Austin Hotel with both tasting and à la carte menus. On the more under-the-radar side, there's a Jordanian truck called 7beebz Korner Jordan Grill picking up buzz on the east side despite having almost no online presence; love to see it!
Brotherton's Black Iron Barbecue up north posted that they were on the brink, and then sold out two days straight thanks to a wave of community support. A good reminder of how loved some of these spots are.
And it looks like 2026 will be bringing some big names: Kevin Durant's Sports Club, The Butcher's Daughter, a Driskill Grill revival, Roselle Pizzeria, and social club concept The Mackenzie Club.
For the events this week, we have a great mix of playful escapism and intentional community. Go full fantasy and nostalgia with things like SNOW DAY at 29th Street Ballroom, the Edgar Allan Poe Ball, Barbarian Night, and a 90s/2000s rooftop party, and then you can balance it with some connection and growth focused experiences like workshops on Indigenous art, envisioning your “delulu” 2026, and feminine productivity.
