What's Weird ATX
Hey all, this week, before the lil Austin news roundup, I want to highlight a few other amazing newsletters, either focusing on Austin or written by Austinites. Please check them out and subscribe if you find them interesting!
Under Construction with Evil Mopac - funnies and food reviews
Austin is Burning - film critiques
Austin Business Review - ATX business and networking events
Austin Design Hub - and lastly thanks to Michael Moran for helping me put together this list, if you are into creative/design/UX, please check out his creative events newsletter!
After 26 years on Congress Avenue, the beloved Hideout Theatre is being forced out of its original historic home at 617 Congress Avenue, but has found a perfect new weird home at Art Hub ATX on South I-35, with co-owner Kareem Badr remarking that "The Art Hub is exactly the kind of weird and funky that defined Austin when The Hideout was first built in 1999."
If you prefer to be generous while you eat, there’s a couple of ways to sate yourself this week: Antonelli’s is offering their popular Cheese 101 tasting with 20% of proceeds going towards the Pug Rescue of Austin. Additionally, JewBoy burgers is donating $2 to The Austin Chronicle for every "Duke" burger sold during July.
In other (perhaps unsurprising) food news, Austin claimed NINE of the top 100 food trucks nationally on Yelp's 2025 list (more than any other U.S. city), led by Jim's Smokehouse at #2 and T-Loc's Sonora Hot Dogs (a personal favorite of mine) at #8, while two local sushi restaurants made the Top 100 Places to Eat list. New restaurant openings included Konbini Sushi (a Japanese-Mexican fusion pop-up) and Old Alley Hot Pot (authentic Sichuan cuisine), coinciding with the massive JAPAN Fes festival at Republic Square featuring 175+ vendors. (Did you go? How was it?) The week also saw industry recognition with Craft Omakase topping Texas Monthly's Best New Restaurants list.
Lastly, Austin's heart is collectively breaking for Noodles, an 8-year-old black terrier who was stolen from his owner's car in South Austin on July 25th. Noodles belongs to Taylor, a popular local food influencer known as @austineater. Taylor's car was recovered about 20 miles east on Highway 71 near Bastrop the following day, but Noodles remains missing. The community has rallied around the search effort, with volunteers posting flyers, conducting searches, and spreading the word across social media. Austin pet rescue organization TRAPRS is assisting with the search and advises anyone who spots Noodles not to chase him, as he's naturally shy and likely frightened, but instead to take a photo and immediately contact the tip line at 844-287-2777. Austinites are checking in regularly for updates and vowing to keep searching until the beloved pup is safely home.
