What's Weird ATX
Well folks, we’ve had quite the eventful July 4th weekend, unfortunately not in a good way.
Austin was hit hard by the flash floods, with heavy overnight rains causing sudden dangerous rises in water, especially around Sandy Creek and Leander. Several people lost their lives, homes were washed away, and emergency crews carried out more than 150 rescues. Roads, utilities, and public services took a big hit, but Austin’s flood warning systems likely prevented worse outcomes.
The situation In Kerrville was substantially more devastating. The Guadalupe River rose over 26 feet in under an hour, sweeping through summer camps and homes. Dozens of lives were lost. Recovery efforts continue and the community is rallying to support those affected. The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country has set up a fund if you are looking for a way to donate.
Our area is really coming together at this moment to support each other. Several businesses around town are donating profits to relief efforts, so make sure to hit up these local spots.
In more uplifting news, Austin's food scene had a historic week with Arjav Ezekiel from Birdie's winning the inaugural James Beard Award for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service—making Austin the first city to claim this new category. The period also marked the end of an era as Z'Tejas permanently closed its final Kyle location on June 30 after 36 years, while new openings include Bar Hacienda (an underground speakeasy beneath Tiger Lily downtown) and La La Land Kind Cafe's first Austin location on South Congress. Austin's beverage reputation was further cemented with 23 local restaurants receiving Wine Spectator 2025 Restaurant Awards.
Events are a bit sparse this week, but we do have some pretty fun ones going on… at least a couple of events celebrating the classic film Jaws, and a lot of really adventurous theater!
