What's Weird ATX

They Look Like Us Now…

Well as usual it’s been an eventful week in Austin… on my end I’ve been burning the midnight oil on the WhatsGoodATX iOS app, but the rest of the town has been steeling themselves for the robot invasion (see what I did there?)
To much chagrin and some anticipation, the Tesla robotaxi service launched on June 22 in a geofenced downtown area, ignoring the request of TX lawmakers that it be delayed until September. Luckily, there will be human monitors in passenger seats at least for awhile.
Just yesterday, Gov. Abbott vetoed a bill that would have banned all THC consumables, allowing the state's booming billion-dollar market of THC-infused vapes, gummies and other products to keep operating. Rather unexpected, though Abbott received a ton of pressure from veterans groups and constituents.
The Austin Eagle faced an unexpected immediate closure due to a lift tipping over next door and smashing through one of their exterior walls, cutting their power and water. Costs are starting to pile up and the owners will likely hold a fundraiser shortly if the landlord is unable to fix the establishment soon, so keep an eye out for that!
This week’s food news: Smoke Break barbecue launched on June 20, representing successful collaboration between established restaurant Salty Sow and food truck Waylon J's, serving smoked meats including prime brisket and Sichuan bacon ribs during lunch hours when Salty Sow typically sits empty. Meanwhile, Stella San Jac held its farewell celebration on June 27, marking the end of another Austin dining institution after 10 years, with guests receiving vouchers for the replacement seafood concept called Skipjack Oyster. The food community also gathered June 20 for memorial services honoring Scott Zublin, owner of iconic Texas Chili Parlor who died June 7 at age 67, who had rescued the 49-year-old institution in 2002 when the state seized it for unpaid taxes.
