In case you don’t spend all your time scrolling Austin social media, a 1,200-pound giraffe named Gracie escaped a Hill Country ranch near Leakey two weeks ago. She's three years old, ten feet tall, and she outran helicopters for fourteen days across some of the most rugged terrain in Real County. They finally spotted her Friday morning from the air, about four miles from home, hanging out by a creek. Her owner had a $5,000 reward posted, but it was the helicopter crew that finally tracked her down. Social media fans “snapped pics” of Gracie tubing at Garner State Park, strolling the River Walk, and bellying up to bars across the state. The sheriff also casually dropped that he's dealt with missing wildebeests, water buffalo, zebras, and monkeys over the years, but never a giraffe; well it’s about time, I suppose.
Is Austin a real sports city now? the NHL formally opened a six-month evaluation process for expansion to Austin or Houston. This puts us in genuine contention for a pro hockey franchise for the first time. The nightlife spillover from a major arena anchoring downtown would be quite significant.
Now for the thing that actually matters to your housing costs and commute: Dog's Head. Travis County commissioners held their first public meeting on the 2,600-acre mega-development in Southeast Austin this week (nine times the size of the Domain) and spent nearly an hour grilling the city and Endeavor Real Estate about what's actually getting built. The answer is still essentially: TBD. The proposed tax financing could funnel up to $2.2 billion in public subsidies into the project over 35 years. Commissioner Morales asked, "Are you going to build an H-E-B? I mean, I want to know." The Environmental Commission meeting the week before was even more heated. Longtime activist Robin Rather stared directly at the developers and told them they'd "betrayed everything that's important about Austin." Neighbors keep pointing out they found out about the whole thing 48 hours before council voted on it. While the development is generally regarded as an eventual boon to the area, two billion dollars of public money, 2,600 acres along the Colorado River, and the people who live next to it getting a two-day heads-up is a bit alarming.
The City council is assembling a roughly $390 million bond package for November, meanwhile the Zilker 351 nonprofit is specifically pushing for money to restore Barking Springs, the free side of Barton Springs Pool. Barton Springs itself is back open after last week's flood cleanup, though Deep Eddy stays closed through the weekend for valve repairs.
After three and a half years of renovation, the Mexican American Cultural Center reopened earlier this month. It’s a 50,000-square-foot space with a teaching kitchen, new galleries, a youth education wing, and a gorgeous expanded zócalo right on the hike-and-bike trail. If you haven’t been to visit ESB-MACC yet, go!
The biggest Austin food news this week was Hopdoddy getting sold. Founders Table Restaurant Group, which owns Chopt and Dos Toros, acquired the Austin-born burger chain and its 47 locations, with long-time CEO Jeff Chandler stepping into an advisory role after a decade and the new owners talking up "non-traditional licensing" (think airport and hospital expansions). Gati Scoops opened Saturday on Duval with 16 rotating vegan ice cream flavors including tamarind candy and a local peach cobbler sundae, Kura Revolving Sushi Bar is soft-opening in Sunset Valley, and Bar Toti launched a summer Apéro Hour with half-off smashburgesas and $7 aperitivos Tuesday through Sunday. Serenade downtown started a weekly "Sunday Sauce" pasta night: salad, pasta, dessert, and bread for $35! and the Loren Hotel is getting a Moody Tongue Sushi pop-up starting July 2, which is the spin-off of Chicago's Michelin-starred brewery. Austin also picked up nine new Wine Spectator awards this year, including Geraldine's, Kappo Kappo, and Qi.

Meet and Greet with Katsura Sunshine (Rakugo)

Doya Palooza 2026

The Austin Farm Sanctuary's biggest annual day honors Doya (the first pig they ever rescued) with 250+ resident animals, live music across the grounds all day, plant-based food, local vendors, a silent auction, and the Watermelon Jamboree: a formal watermelon-feeding ceremony for the pigs, cows, and other residents. American Idiot Anti-4th of July Drag Show

Green Day's American Idiot — the full album — performed entirely in drag, on the Fourth of July, at Elysium: Austin's most perfectly timed anti-patriotism event of the year. Hosted by Brigitte Bandit and Calor with a cast including Aqua Marie Pardi, Fairy Petite, Hilda Dixon, and Schitzo the Clown, this is the room where people who don't wanna be American idiots actually go.
SALSATÓN
4 PM – 9 PM @ Coconut Club, $8
Two Latin stages for the Fourth: the Neon Grotto runs reggaeton and dembow courtesy of Perreo Club from 4 PM, while Coconut Club opens with a salsa class from instructors Yoshi and Frida before DJ FnF takes over with full sazón energy. Texarican brings Boricua kitchen food; Bacardi is running drink specials until sold out. A genuinely festive Latin cultural event that doesn't need fireworks to justify the party.
July 4th Downtown Austin Fireworks Paddle Event
7 PM – 11:30 PM @ 2200 South Lakeshore Blvd, $70
The best seat for Austin's fireworks is from the water — this organized group paddle puts you directly underneath the show with sparks arcing overhead and the downtown skyline lit up around you. Hole-A-Palooza 4th of July 90s Tribute Fest
3 PM (doors) @ Hole in the Wall, $20
Ten tribute bands, one full day, one legendary venue: Hole-A-Palooza runs 4 PM through 1 AM with bands honoring The Cure, Nirvana, Pixies, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Guided by Voices, Stone Temple Pilots, R.E.M., and The Clash. Local food vendors, artist booths, and a set schedule that ends with a band called Dankeshon closing out as Nirvana at midnight — which somehow makes the whole thing even more appropriate as a July 4th activity.

Antone's 51st Anniversary: Miss Lavelle's Birthday Soul Revue

Austin's legendary blues club turns 51 with an all-star tribute to Miss Lavelle White (one of the city's true music icons) featuring Jennifer Foster & The Audacity, Soul Man Sam, and Malford Milligan. Advance tickets start at $20, and proceeds benefit HOME (Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers).
FIFA Far Out Cup

Five amateur soccer crews compete across three events — Soccer Tennis, a controller-to-controller FIFA tournament, and a soccer driving range (Top Golf–style, but with a soccer ball) — in an afternoon of beautiful, chaotic nonsense at the Far Out. The winning team takes home bar rights and a full bar tab for the next soccer event, which means this one's going to get serious fast.
Independent Rapper Day 2026

Underground Voices Live celebrates indie hip-hop with an open mic from 7:30–9pm, then full sets by local heavy hitters Blayce The Rapper, Ryan Dove, Soto The Activist, and CHHK — all for $10 at the door. Five hours of grassroots Austin hip-hop with actual stakes, hosted by Blayce himself.
Rosie's 13th Pug Birthday Party
