What's Weird ATX
Hope everyone is doing OK after last week's storm! The winds that tore through north-central Austin, doing the most damage in Hyde Park/North Loop area (my old haunts) it seems, actually reached 85mph and even blew out windows at the top of the Texas Capitol. It was strange watching from South Austin where large parts didn't even get a drop of rain...
There's lots of interesting news for animal lovers this week. For the bird-lovers among us (of which there are many!)— Our beloved golden-cheeked warblers just scored a major conservation victory. These songbirds are exclusive to Texas and depend entirely on Ashe juniper bark for their nests; and the trees were threatened by a few bills that just died in the Senate last week. And on the wacky side, apparently raccoons have been living in the walls at the East Austin Trio Apartments! Who knew??
Highlights of the past week in the food scene include the opening of Le Calamar, a new French bistro, and the unexpected arrival of Citizens All Day, an Australian-inspired café from NYC. On a sadder note, beloved local institution East Side King is closing its South Lamar location on June 7, so make sure to visit before then! Additionally, the city's cocktail scene is gaining national recognition with Papercut vying for a spot among the country's top cocktail bars, and Nickel City's Amanda Jones nominated for bartender of the year.
We have a really big announcement coming up next week hopefully, so get excited! And if you’d like a sneak peek as to what’s to come, join us on Discord where I’ll be making an update in the next couple of days!
