Hope you’re enjoying the last few days of SXSW! Our iconic festival turned 40 this year and it did feel like a reckoning. Since our convention center is currently just a hole in the ground, the festival has been scattered across downtown in a shorter, denser and more "decentralized" format. Steven Spielberg delivered a keynote about aliens, John Goodman served chili, and make sure you check out the “Hollywood Walk of Fame” along Brazos! 👀 And, the always awesome Downtown Austin Alliance used SXSW‑related street closures to run an Art and Parks bike and pedicab tour from Waterloo Park so people could explore public art and green space in car‑free streets.
SXSW itself unfolded under unusually tight security in the shadow of the shooting at Buford’s on March 1st, as organizers publicly denied rumors the festival might bolt for another city. There was lots of awesome free stuff as usual: Orville Peck on Congress Ave, The Lumineers at Waterloo Park, a block party that ran all week. But what is SXSW becoming? The music showcase lineup has been cut in half since its 2015 peak, and the energy is clearly shifting toward film premieres, brand activations, and an "Innovation" track that covers AI, health tech, creator economy, and startups. SXSW was born in 1987 as a scrappy regional music industry meetup, and now it seems to be firmly evolving into a film and tech conference that also has music.
Are you doing any SXSW stuff this year? |
As for the rest of Austin, the 140‑year‑old Victorian house that once hosted Cenote on Cesar Chavez was demolished far beyond what the developer’s permits allowed, triggering a stop‑work order and intensifying debate over city’s ability to actually enforce historic preservation. Community members organized around tragedy with a fundraising 5K run from Juliet Italian Kitchen to support shooting victims’ families and medical costs.
And in some good news, local outlets have lately been hailing Austin as a kind of “housing miracle,” pointing to about 50K new units built in three years, 15K more on the way, and average rents roughly 22% below their recent peak! Also, long‑ignored county roads are finally getting long‑promised repairs after residents say they have waited around two decades.
The spring equinox is on Thursday the 20th this year; the sun crosses the equator and day and night are almost perfectly equal in length. We’ve got lots of equinox celebrations this weekend so make sure to check those out, as it is traditionally a marker of renewal and fresh starts. You definitely will want to take part, especially if you're launching something or planting something!
It’s also St Paddy’s Day today ☘️ , so go get some green beer at your favorite watering hole! My particular pick below 🙂 And my pick of the week, a very cute singles movie fan event on Sunday.
