Last weekend, thousands of Austinites turned out for another No Kings protest downtown, with the rally beginning at City Hall, moving across the Congress Avenue Bridge, and regrouping at Auditorium Shores for speeches, performances, and connection. Organizers said it was the third nationwide No Kings protest and that the Austin version was their largest and most collaborative yet, with more than 80 groups involved and a very anti-Trump, civic-activist energy running through the crowd. The protest also caused road closures and traffic impacts downtown, so it felt like a real citywide event rather than just a march.
At the same time, Austin Bergstrom became its own local news story because of long TSA lines and crowded morning security checkpoints. Reports said some lines were stretching outside the terminal early in the day, with the worst congestion usually hitting between about 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Airport officials were dealing with unusually heavy spring travel, SXSW spillover, and near-record passenger volume. The airport opened a fourth checkpoint to help, but that still didn’t fully fix the morning rush, especially for travelers who couldn’t use PreCheck or CLEAR at the new lane.
Another highlight from last weekend was the first-ever parallel parking competition, which turned the much-dreaded skill into a public contest and fundraiser at Canopy Austin. More than 78 people reportedly competed and the event raised over $500 for SAGE Studio & Gallery. The winner finished in 26.9 seconds with zero centimeters from the curb, taking home a handmade pipe cleaner sculpture created by a SAGE artist.
As usual, our food scene had a mix of openings and buzz this week, with the biggest highlight being Austin Oyster Co. opening its first permanent restaurant in East Austin. This brings a new seafood destination to a market usually awash with tacos, barbecue, and trend-forward neighborhood spots. The menu is broad enough to appeal beyond oyster fans alone, with items like tuna tartare, shrimp cocktail, mussels, a lobster roll, and a Texas Wagyu burger.
Another highlight was the launch of the Golden Taco Awards, which puts a spotlight on our taco culture through a community vote; it really drives home how central tacos are to our identity!
This week runs the gamut from super educational, learning about spelunking and springs or a chance to get started with bellydancing, to several opportunities to lose yourself in various kinds of wild dance, to all different kinds of egg hunts for kids and adults alike! With Google making me change the email format a bit, I’ve had to remove the event links from the email, so click through to see all the links and events in the web version. I’m annoyed about it, but the silver lining is that I can provide even more weird and wonderful events to you online. So please make sure you tap in!
