What's Weird ATX

Hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day! I took a little break from the newsletter yesterday, but hopefully you got out and enjoyed regardless, or found an event or two to go to using WhatsGoodATX. The city was humming with good vibes, cold drinks, and a lot of bad driving…

In food news, things have been deliciously chaotic (as usual). Swedish Hill has officially expanded to South 1st, bringing more of their flaky, buttery magic to the south side. Taginè Moroccan Cuisine just opened and is already making waves with its hard-to-find, deeply spiced North African dishes. Hot Luck Fest should have delivered its signature combo of open-pit wizardry and live tunes in support of the Southern Smoke Foundation; we are dying to know how it went! Feel free to reply to this email and let us know. Barks for Beers brought together 30 dog-friendly breweries for a cause, Canje’s block party returned with serious island energy, and Alamo Drafthouse hosted a “Cheesy Mission: Impossible Feast”. That last one should still be going on through June 9.

Now, in completely unrelated news: has anyone been attacked by rogue nipple-biting fish under Pennybacker Bridge? This past week, we’ve heard of men just trying to chill on a lily pad when a squad of fish started targeting them with surgical precision. Screams. Blood. A mild existential crisis. If this has happened to you, we need answers.

Meanwhile, it’s set to look a little gloomy all week (AWESOME!) But, if you're looking to stay dry and entertained this weekend, the ATX TV Festival is stacked: Christine Baranski, Jon Hamm’s doing a Mad Men retrospective, and there's a live table read of an unproduced Mike Flanagan script. And The Leftovers cast will be there as well. Looks like a lot of awesome panels and some pretty fun satellite events like happy hours too! GA tickets are still available with a $100 local discount here.

June is just around the corner, which means Pride events are starting to kick off—as you’ll see in the listings below. It's shaping up to be one of those summers where everything's happening, everywhere, all at once!

Lastly, if you’ve got some furry best friends like me, here’s a gentle reminder to consider pet insurance. Our sponsor, Money.com, has a good overview of the best ones in 2025. Scroll down and check it out a little further down below, if that’s relevant to you!
