What's Weird ATX

Around 581K bats took advantage of strong North winds to migrate south from Congress Bridge on October 28, after an earlier migration on October 21. 300K bats are still at the bridge. The Austin Bat Refuge has been tracking over 100 data points per night to predict bat flight times, which is a pretty cool use of citizen science to help people catch one of Austin's most iconic spectacles.

This Halloween showed quite a stark divide amongst Austin neighborhoods. While some areas like Mueller were absolutely swamped, with one resident giving out over 1K! pieces of candy, many other neighborhoods experienced their slowest Halloween in years. It seems families are increasingly driving to wealthy "hot spot" neighborhoods and trunk-or-treat events rather than trick-or-treating locally, leaving decorated houses in quieter areas with few visitors. Some creative Austinites went beyond traditional candy, handing out cup noodles, Takis, and mini beef sticks, which were surprisingly popular with older kids. The trend has residents debating whether neighborhood trick-or-treating culture has changed forever.

Would you attend a workshop on creating weird and wonderful events?

I put on an event this year, an interactive theater jazz thing if some of you OGs remember. It was one of the best times of my life. IMO, the best way to keep Austin weird is to empower people to be the change they want to see in the world. Do it with me?

The biggest food news this past week was the 2025 Michelin Guide announcement on October 28. Austin had 51 restaurants recognized, with the same seven Michelin-starred restaurants retaining their honors from 2024. Notable additions included Nixta Taqueria earning a new Green Star for sustainability, Mercado Sin Nombre and Parish Barbecue winning Bib Gourmand Awards, and several new restaurants added to the recommended list including Fabrik, Siti, Pasta Bar, Le Calamar, and Poeta. Celia Pellegrini of Este and Suerte received the Sommelier Award, while Chuck Charnichart of Barbs-B-Q in Lockhart got the Young Chef Award.

On the openings front, Shokunin, a California-inspired sushi bar from a well-known Austin restaurant couple, debuted on October 30. Trader Joe's opened its first Bee Cave location on October 29. Juliet Italian Kitchen in Georgetown transitioned to Juliet Social on October 29, becoming more of a cafe and event space. On a somber note, Dos Olivos Market in Wimberley permanently closed on October 31 after seven years. Looking ahead, Leona Botanical Cafe & Bar (featuring Dee Dee, Veracruz All Natural, and a new Bun Bun Burger) is set to open November 11, and celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern will be signing his new seafood cookbook at the Lake Austin H-E-B on November 12.

Swift’s Attic, Wu Chow, Meanwhile Brewing, Parker + Scott, and GoPuff, as well as other establishments have stepped up to help families affected by the federal government shutdown's impact on SNAP benefits.
