What's Weird ATX

If you ❤️ this newsletter, consider becoming a WhatsWeirdATX supporter for just $2 a month

A couple of days ago, multiple residents spotted a spectacular meteor around 4 AM from the Delta Aurigid meteor shower. The fireball glowed blue/white with a black core and left a trail hanging in the sky for 10-20 seconds, with one person even capturing it on their weather camera. The city's beloved HOPE Outdoor Gallery made its long-awaited return after nearly a decade, opening at a new location and already attracting artists and curious locals eager to see the iconic graffiti park revived.

Austinites voiced opposition to the new light rail maintenance facility in East Austin, with debates covering everything from potential graffiti issues to rumors the site might be haunted due to its proximity to historic neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the biggest controversy of the week came when Governor Abbott ordered Austin and other Texas cities to remove rainbow Pride crosswalks and political street art like the "Black Artists Matter" mural on 11th Street, citing federal roadway safety guidelines. The city has 30 days to comply or risk losing hundreds of millions in state and federal funding; $175 million in current transportation grants alone. City officials identified about 16 affected locations, including the iconic rainbow crosswalks at Fourth and Colorado Streets and potentially the massive "TEXAS" mural on Guadalupe Street near UT. While Austin officials announced they would comply with the order, Mayor Kirk Watson proposed finding alternative ways to showcase the city's diversity and pride, suggesting community-funded installations off roadways to demonstrate that "Austin's pride, love, and diversity won't be suppressed."

As usual, our food scene had several exciting openings and collaborations this past week. Velvet Taco opened a new North Austin location on October 6 at the former Flyrite Chicken space on Burnet Road, serving fusion tacos with unique flavors like spicy tikka chicken and beer-battered cauliflower. The beloved Cenote café made its comeback on October 3 at its new location on East 7th Street after closing earlier this year, bringing back classic diner foods and Mexican comfort dishes to loyal fans. Just south of Austin, Sprouts Farmers Market opened its first Kyle location on October 10 with a weekend of festivities including tastings and giveaways. On the brunch front, Southeast Asian restaurant Siti partnered with Michelin-starred La Barbecue pitmaster Ali Clem for a new weekend brunch service featuring smoky creations like brisket nasi goreng and arroz caldo with smoked turkey. Meanwhile in Round Rock, Island Riddim Jerk & Grill opened mid-October, serving Caribbean cuisine with proceeds supporting education in Jamaica, and Pins Mechanical bowling alley welcomed new food vendors including Lefty's Pizza, known for its caramelized crust.

The events are weirder than ever this week as we hit the October Halloween stride. Nude figure drawing at a historic mansion to goblin summoning circles, and even John Waters presenting two cult classics in person with scratch-n-sniff Odorama cards and a romantasy trivia competition aboard a vintage steam train.
