What's Weird ATX

The past week's standout story has to be the contrast between Governor Abbott's warnings about the No Kings 2 protest and what actually showed up: tens of thousands of peaceful demonstrators, many dressed as inflatable dinosaurs, unicorns, and cows. Despite the National Guard deployment and ominous rhetoric about potential unrest, downtown Austin got a wholesome Saturday parade atmosphere instead of pitched battles. Meanwhile, in a genuinely heartwarming subplot to the ongoing state-versus-city culture war over street art, Austin Fire Department crews turned their hoses on the vandalized rainbow crosswalk at 4th and Colorado; not to remove it per state orders, but to clean off red paint so a community gathering could continue.
Elsewhere, the Formula 1 weekend brought its own absurdity with trophy designers unveiling massive longhorn-horned awards that immediately sparked concerns about "shock impalement" during podium celebrations. The trophies look stunning but feature actual life-size protruding horns, which seems like an oversight when you consider drivers tend to spray champagne and jump around up there. In perhaps the week's strangest legal development, the Travis County DA quietly dropped charges against two people accused of conducting "experiments" on corpses at a North Austin mortuary, leaving everyone with more questions than answers about what exactly happened there. A fitting story for spooky season, to be sure.

Austin's food scene had a dramatic week: let’s start with last night’s fire at the beloved Home Slice Pizza on South Congress, that originated in a void space around the pizza oven exhaust vent, forcing a temporary closure of the local institution with no injuries reported. On a brighter note, Fonda San Miguel is releasing a 50th-anniversary cookbook on October 21, while the Palestinian family behind Peace Bakery launched their Middle Eastern food truck Salams Grill at Vacancy Brewing in South Austin, serving shawarma wraps and coriander fries. The week also brought national recognition to local chains: Texas-based Layne's Chicken Fingers landed at #6 on Restaurant Business's "Future 50" fastest-growing small chains list, and Austin's Via 313 earned the #17 spot while being recognized as the top gluten-free pizza chain in the U.S. Looking ahead, the plant-based Seed Food & Wine Festival kicks off October 22-26 with tastings, film screenings, and a 5K, and the upcoming Panda Fest (an AAPI cultural and food festival scheduled for November 14-16 at Republic Square) is already generating buzz, though some vendors have raised concerns about high participation fees and poor past performance at similar events in other cities. Meanwhile, Chef Laila Bazahm is opening Siti at the Frances Modern Inn, filling what she sees as a gap in Austin's Southeast Asian offerings with curry pastes, char-grilled meats, and lobster chili crab.
The coming week delivers the weird in spades but is also looking tasty as hell! From plant-based chefs battling for the Golden Taco Trophy at The Texas Taco Throwdown, to Nando's Fire Truck rolling into BATCH with free South African peri peri chicken for the first 250 people, plus an entire Oysterfest featuring eight local oyster farms with shucking competitions and chef-dressed half-shells, your stomach won't know what hit it.
