What's Weird ATX

If you ❀ this newsletter, consider becoming a WhatsWeirdATX supporter for just $2 a month

In news we can’t ignore this past week, there was a shooting at the Austin Central Library of all places. The incident occurred on the sixth floor in a men's restroom, where one person was shot in the stomach before the suspect fled and was captured about an hour and a half later in South Austin (Yes, they took the bus!?>!). Police emphasized this was an isolated incident between two individuals, not an active shooter situation.

On a brighter note, Habitat for Humanity broke ground just yesterday on quite the audacious undertaking: building 25 affordable homes in just 5 days! This certainly showcases the community's commitment to helping families in need.

Austin now leads the nation as the strongest buyer's market, with an estimated 130% more home sellers than buyers in September; way more than double the national average of 37%. Seven metros nationwide have sellers outnumbering buyers by at least 2-to-1, and all but one are in Texas or Florida, both nondisclosure states where property sale prices aren't publicly recorded. While this is harsh for sellers, it's at least creating opportunities for first-time buyers who've been priced out for years. Rents have dropped so significantly that Austinites are reconsidering homeownership as mortgage payments are finally becoming more competitive with rental costs.

With prices down so much, are you reconsidering buying a home?

As usual, the food scene is kickin’. Fonda San Miguel, the iconic restaurant founded in 1975 by Tom Gilliland and Miguel Ravago, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with "The Soul of Fonda San Miguel: Fifty Years of Food and Art," released October 21. The book features over 100 recipes and photographs of the museum-quality Mexican artwork that adorns the restaurant's walls, offering an immersive tribute with five seasonal chapters containing recipes, reflections on the restaurant's founding, and heartfelt anecdotes from longtime customers. Meanwhile, Chef Paul Qui (James Beard Award winner and Top Chef Season 9 champion) opened Top Roe on October 23: Austin's first handroll bar, featuring eight handroll sets including a signature caviar set plus an intimate 12-seat cocktail lounge called Foxtail serving Japanese-inspired drinks. A French-inspired brasserie called Serenade just opened on October 27 on 2nd Street, led by Chef Johnny Ray Stinebaugh (formerly of Contigo Catering and Geraldine's), serving locally sourced duck confit, dry-aged tomahawk ribeye, and blue crab Benedict. The Palestinian family behind Peace Bakery officially opened their Middle Eastern food truck Salams Grill at Vacancy Brewing in South Austin, serving shawarma wraps, hummus, and coriander fries. And in a nod to Austin's past, Rusty Zagst, owner of the beloved (but closed) Shady Grove restaurant, broke ground on October 15 for his refreshed concept A Little Shady, a fast-casual spinoff blending vintage design with modern vibes that's slated to open in February 2026 in Kyle.

With the looming government shutdown threatening SNAP benefits for many families, please consider donating surplus food to atxfreefridge.com to help your neighbors in need.

Congratulations to our WhatsWeirdATX Costume Contest winner, Jonas!

It was tough, but Jonas won out over his worthy opponents with a weird and very Austin costume 😄 đŸ§‘â€đŸ’Œ Thank you Jonas and all the other entrants! Maybe next year we’ll have a prize!

I have to say, I went a little crazy with the spooky events this week. I couldn’t help it! It’s one of my favorite holidays. There’s definitely some other non-halloween stuff there too but it’s a bit few and far between 😳 If you’d like to see other types of events, there’s always WhatsGoodATX!
