What's Weird ATX
In last week’s news, Austin police encountered a large western rat snake at Xpress Car Wash; it was "trespassing" and attempting a "hiss-terical getaway" before being released with just a warning 😂 On August 29, Austinites were heartbroken when Top Drawer Thrift was forced to remove their iconic 8-foot oversized dresser sculpture from their rooftop due to landlord roof concerns, prompting the community to organize a fundraising drag show complete with caftan dress code at the Austin Eagle. Separately, concerned citizens gathered at City Hall on August 28 to protest a $2 million AI surveillance camera program, complaining about cameras that can track people with thermal imaging and "blast loud music to harass bystanders," with protesters noting Austin had just ended its previous camera contract for having a 0.2% success rate. This protest gained unusual momentum thanks to repair shop owner and local YouTube celebrity Louis Rossmann, who rallied citizens through his characteristically blunt messaging about preventing dystopian surveillance from becoming the new normal.
What's the biggest issue facing your neighborhood right now? |
There was lots of political theater when Governor Abbott signed the "Make Texas Healthy Again" legislation alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at the Texas Capitol on August 27, mandating food industry warning labels in a ceremony that felt more like performance art than policy. A man was arrested on August 26 for breaking into Austin Pets Alive, leading to one dog's death and injuries to five others in an incident that shocked the animal-loving community. Austin Police issued warnings about a planned "illegal street takeover event" for August 29, threatening arrests and vehicle impoundments while highlighting the city's ongoing battle with underground car culture. The University of Texas kicked off the academic year with the Gone to Texas celebration featuring photo ops with mascot Hook 'Em, while a yellow Labrador named K-9 Sasha retired on August 29 after six years as an explosives detection dog at the State Capitol, marking the end of an era for Capitol security.

Last week, Austin’s food scene had several notable developments. Upscale barbecue joint Black Gold abruptly closed and deleted all social media accounts without explanation, joining a growing list of restaurant closures that have marked 2025 as a challenging year for Austin dining establishments. Cover 2, the elevated sports bar that had served North Austin since 2012, also announced its closure, citing the end of an era while reassuring customers that its sister locations remain open. The last closing I will mention is Natural Grocer On a brighter note, Konbini, the highly anticipated sushi restaurant from the team behind Michelin recommended Tare, quietly opened in the back of cocktail bar Papercut, bringing omakase-style dining to East 5th Street.
