What's Weird ATX

This past week a few longtime Austin mysteries were “solved”.
For the first, researchers from Texas State University and Austin Police formally debunked the "Rainey Street Ripper" conspiracy theory on September 4. This viral social media phenomenon claimed a serial killer was targeting people near Lady Bird Lake, but scientists examined nearly 200 lake drowning deaths from 2004-2025 and found no evidence of foul play. Instead, they attributed the deaths to alcohol consumption combined with the proximity of bars to the water. Researchers took great pains to analyze what had become an internet urban legend, using scientific methodology to disprove social media rumors. The study shows how modern folklore can gain enough traction to require academic intervention these days!
KUT Radio's ATXplained series solved another long-standing Austin mystery that had puzzled East Austin residents: mysterious flour patterns appearing as dots, X's, and arrows along trails like Boggy Creek. The culprits turned out to be Austin's chapter of the Hash House Harriers, a 40-year-old "drinking club with a running problem" involving members with colorful nicknames like "Bubbles the Sad Beer Clown" and "Lady Bird's Johnson" laying elaborate flour trails for others to follow to reach beer at the finish.
Meanwhile, Austin 311 data revealed fox complaints hit five-year highs, leading to resident frustration when they discovered the city offers essentially no services for these types of wildlife encounters. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials had to explain that foxes are beneficial for rodent control and pose no real threat, but there’s a little bureaucratic comedy in residents calling 311 about foxes, only to learn there's nothing the city will do about them 😂
Last Week’s Poll: Rising Costs our greatest Concern
Not too surprising, but rising costs was by far the most popular choice in our last poll. Heard! I always try to include a lot of free and budget-friendly event options in the newsletter but I will put even more of a focus on this going forward 💰
The highlight of Austin's food scene news this past week was definitely the launch of Austin Restaurant Weeks on August 29, featuring over 85 renowned restaurants offering discounted prix-fixe menus through September 14 to benefit the Central Texas Food Bank. (If you want our top picks, check out our Instagram @whats.good.atx!)
The week also brought several exciting openings, including Lil' Ramen Tatsu-ya's new walk-up window location near UT campus serving their famous ramen daily, Tacodeli's milestone 10th Austin-area location in Cedar Park (featuring their first-ever drive-thru), and Victory Lap's second Austin spot on Rainey Street that opened perfectly timed for the big Texas vs. Ohio State game. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, Kerbey Lane Cafe is marking 45 years in business with a special $45 dinner for two deal. Also this weekend, check out Waylon J’s grand opening, featuring $3 frozen old fashioned and a chance at a $200 gift card!
