What's Weird ATX

As I mentioned briefly last week, No Kings 3 brought thousands downtown on March 28. One of its most consequential aftershocks is now playing out at City Hall, where four council members officially asked the city manager on Friday to begin the process of renaming Cesar Chavez st following the sexual abuse allegations against the late labor leader. A petition to rename it after fallen APD officer Jorge Pastore already has 900+ signatures. And the iconic Chavez mural at Cesar Chavez and Waller, the one that welcomed people into East Austin for 46 years, has already been painted over. The building owners made the call after the New York Times investigation; for now the wall just sits blank. Last civic beat mentions: the city manager backed off the most aggressive piece of the One-ATS IT consolidation plan after weeks of union pressure, a Workday glitch overpaid 675 employees by $1.4 million, and a federal trial got underway that could force Texas to air-condition its entire prison system at a cost TDCJ says could hit $1.5 billion.
In a bit of surprise, last week Hole in the Wall changed hands; Mike Lavigne and Hotel Vegas alum Courtney Goforth are taking over from Will Tanner, with the Cugini family and some unnamed musicians also holding stakes in a new ownership structure. More touring acts, more punk, more drag, more comedy (and booth fixing!) are in the works! Two Hoots & a Holler played their farewell shows at C-Boy's this past weekend after a 40-plus year run, doubling as a benefit for founding member Rick Broussard after a recent stroke. South Congress Hotel announced it's shutting down at the end of May for a year-long rebrand as The Standard, Austin. This is Hyatt's first U.S. Standard opening in over a decade, and they are terminating 126 employees in the process.
Mañana stays open; the fate of Otoko, Maie Day, and Café No Sé is unclear, which matters given how much of SoCo's restaurant identity lived inside that building. First Thursday on SoCo is a strip-wide tradition so it'll likely keep going, but the hotel had become one of the bigger anchor activations on those nights, with live music, DJs, drink specials, so there’s a big question mark here.(Worth noting: Hyatt/Bunkhouse already runs San José, Austin Motel, Magdalena, and Saint Cecilia within a few blocks.)
In food news, the 2026 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards nominees are out, with the event on April 9! The ballot covers everything from Restaurant and Bar of the Year to Best New Restaurant, Rising Star Chef, and Best Sandwich — with nominees ranging from Barley Swine and Odd Duck to newer spots like Le Calamar, Siti, and Parish Barbecue.
Midweek leans intellectual this week, and the weekend is a full-spectrum celebration of Austin's DIY soul. I’ll be out there crafting and philosophizing with y’all! Make sure to click on through to the web version to see the full list, there’s a lot more than what I can fit in the email.
